The tradition of giving gifts at a wedding starts with the dowry for the bride during the days of the arranged marriage. The groom's family would normally "pay" the bride's family and the bride's family would normally provide a dowry which would consist of items that would be useful for starting a household, china, livestock, etc. Well these days marriages are arranged and many times couples have been living together for a while before getting married. So what does a couple who already has an established household ask for as a wedding gift? Why not ask for a contribution to a honeypot? A honeypot is a fund that is set up for the couple to be able to go on a great honeymoon or even to help with a big expense in the home. I know traditions say that it's tacky but tradtions evolve over time. If someone was going to spend $50 on a gift that you already have in the home why not give the $50 for something you can actually USE.
